Big Spring Ranch: Finding Their True Colors

This weekend Full Hearts will be taking a group of five to Big Springs Ranch for Children for our third visit. Located in the hill country, the ranch is a place for abused and abandoned children from around Texas to receive “long-term therapeutic care and substitute parenting.” As outside volunteers, our goal is to form genuine, supportive relationships with the youth, while educating them about the opportunities that are available to them.

Our first two trips saw us spending the bulk of our time establishing relationships with what we have learned is an incredible group of kids. Despite their backgrounds they are typical kids – smart, optomistic, funny, shy, out-going, quiet, loud, you name it. And they LOVE basketball. No really. They do. Aside from their borderline unhealthy appetite for “hooping,” we found that they are hungry for success. This weekend we’re going to give each of them a chance to discover their individual talents and interests with the help of a personality test. Our hope is that through the process of self-discovery they will gain insight into who they are, build self-esteem, and find the confidence to pursue their interests.

Even though the weather is predicted to be cold and dreary we can’t help but be excited about the trip. Big things are going to happen. As always we want our supporters to share in the joy that is Full Hearts. Thank you so much for all you do for us. We could not do it without you.

2011 proved to be a difficult year for Full Hearts and company. As many of you know the drug-related violence in Mexico has continued to surge, meaning trips to the orphanage have become too dangerous to justify on a regular basis. Although our face to face time with the girls was severely diminished we were still able to make donations to help support Casa Hogar financially. Unable to visit and interact with the girls as we did in the past was heartbreaking to say the least. Undeterred, though, we picked up the pieces and found new ways to invest our energies.

2012 will see us getting involved with new endeavors, like Big Spring Ranch for Children, a place for abused and neglected children to find comfort and support. We will be making regular trips to spend quality time with the children there. Our pens are being dipped into new inkwells. We are writing new stories of love and compassion. As always we hope you will share in our stories with us. With your help, this may be our best year ever.

La Musica – Parte Dos.

It’s that time of year again. You find yourself slumped, half-awake at your favorite study spot on campus poring over slides you barely recognize. As you down another cup of coffee, a freshmen streaks by with a nerf-gun. The only thing your frazzled mind seems to know is that zombies will triumph again. They always do. In the face of another week of all-nighters and last minute scan-tron scrambles you welcome the idea of zombie apocalypse. Your brain is practically mush already.

This time of year also means something else, though. The holiday break is right around the corner and again Full Hearts wants to give you a way to close out the semester right. For those of you who came out and enjoyed last years Variety Show, we assure you that we’ve outdone ourselves once again. This year’s show will include performances from local artists Bobby Pearson, Lindsay Harris, and Jackie Hebert. In addition to the music, Good Ghost Bill will be performing spoken-word poetry. Headlining the show will be the up and coming artist Johnny Stimson, whose poppy melodies and thoughtful lyrics have begun to earn him some much deserved recognition. Best of all, because of the generosity of Mr. Stimson and all of our performers in offering their time and talents, we are able to offer tickets at our usual $5. As always the proceeds will go to benefit the beautiful girls of Casa Hogar Orphanage.

So come out and join us this Satuday, December 10th at Mugwalls for a night of music, poetry and memories that will last a lot longer than finals week. If you don’t have am Abraham Lincoln in your wallet we guarantee this will be a show worth digging in couch cushions for that elusive 20th quarter. We’ll try not to glare as you dump your change out. We hope to see you there.

Happy Summer, Ya’ll

I would like to present to you a question as old as time itself: Does Summer rule or drool? Cause we can’t tell here at Full Hearts. Sure, it’s great having a nice long break from school (if you swing that way). But with temperatures up in the 100’s, I’m starting to question why Mother Nature ever even invented Summer While we can’t seem to see the benefit of the sun turning the concrete into a griddle, we can definitely foresee the ways that Full Hearts will be benefiting the lives of the girls at Casa Hogar.

The Summer may be a time for Full Hearts to relax, but it is also a time for us to carefully plan new ways to send love down to Nuevo Laredo. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears…listening… for new merchandise, new people, and new ways for you to get involved.

La Musica: A Full Hearts Benefit Concert

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, although most notably known for his poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride,” is probably more often unwittingly quoted when people say “Music is the universal language of mankind.” Despite a lack of research to validate his claim, we all unanimously understand, on an innate, human level what exactly he’s getting at.

At times we even catch ourselves, hips gyrating ever so slightly at the sound of salsa music or notice our bodies begin to move rhythmically in response to African tribal music. Something in the arrangement of chords and beats just speaks to our souls. Being an organization that dedicates our time to improving the lives of girls that barely speak our language this idea hits home. That there is something that we can all appreciate – regardless of our native tongue.

It is for this reason that Full Hearts will be hosting a concert to benefit the girls of Casa Hogar this coming Saturday, May 7th from 8-11 PM. The show will be at Schotzi’s Bar on Northgate and include such talents as The Conglomerate, The Revivals, Above the Clouds, and Chief Nation. Also, Alex Ravandi will be providing laughs with his stand-up comedy. Tickets will be $5 at the door.

So no matter what language you speak, take some time off from studying to support the girls of Casa Hogar and some great local talents. You won’t be sorry you did. The A on that final won’t be nearly as valuable 20 years from now as the memories you missed out on while studying.

GRAB-a-DATE. No, seriously…Do it.

First of all, the Full Hearts Team would like to extend a thank you to all those who have helped to support our cause. Being an entirely volunteer based non-profit, we rely heavily on the charitable, compassionate hearts of those in our community. So, thank you. We could not do this without the enthusiasm and energy that fresh faces provide. Now that all the mushy-gushy stuff is out of the way we can get to the even mushier-gushier stuff.

This Sunday, May 1st, Full Hearts will be throwing a party — of the scrap-booking variety. And EVERYONE is invited! *Fist Pump* We will have pictures of the girls staying at Casa Hogar, as well as glue, glitter, paper, stickers, scrap-booking supplies and if all goes well, by the end if it all a few hot-glue gun burns as a memento of an afternoon well spent.

If you have an hour, thirty minutes, or even just enough time to drop by. Come. And bring a date. Girl or boy, young or old, Aggie or not – the more the merrier. As usual we will be outside of Mugwalls from 2-5 PM.

This Sunday, Full Hearts will be hosting a pot-luck as an opportunity to share in community with some of our favorite people. With Easter right around the corner we wanted to squeeze in some quality time with our closest friends before the end-of-semester madness ensues.

Details about the location can be found on our Facebook page. As with any pot-luck the surplus or shortage of food will rely on the attendees. Meaning YOU. So bring some foodz y’all – and your appetite. We’re gonna eat ’til we’re stuffed.

As many of you know Full Hearts is built on the idea that it only takes a few dedicated, passionate people to make a difference. And this is more true now than ever. Our numbers are small, but our ideas are big. There is something stirring in our hearts. A dream for the girls of Casa Hogar.

A dream for each and every one of them.

A dream to help them to realize their potential. Trust me when I say they have more than you can imagine. They are more brilliant, creative, and courageous than they even know. We want to teach them see themselves not only as the beautiful, talented young girls that they are, but as the women they can become. The ones who with their strength, compassion, and perserverance will change the world.

Ghandi once said that “If the people lead, the leaders will follow.”

We have no doubt that these girls will be leaders – but we need your help to make them the kind of leaders that this world needs.

Come Make Easter Baskets With Us!

So your spring break was probably a great deal of fun (I know mine was). You might have gone to the beach somewhere in Mexico or been one of the many who braved the droves of music-loving hipsters at South-By. But just because school is back in full swing doesn’t mean the fun should stop.

This Sunday we will be decorating Easter baskets for las ninas of Casa Hogar at Mugwalls from 2-5 PM. The baskets, once decorated, will be filled with items the girls need and even some they want as well. We are convinced that the more we can do to provide for the girls needs, the more successful they will be in living out their dreams. And for those of you that don’t know already – their dreams are beautiful.

So take a break from studying and come join us. Even if you can only spare an hour – come. Your support is invaluable.
